The Heavens Rise

The Heavens Rise is written by Christopher Rice and published by Gallery Books on October 15th, 2013.

The story takes place in New Orleans around 2010s. One decade ago a family is vanished without a trace, but Niquette Delongpre has survived and run away from the town. Only Niquette knew what has happened that night.

Years later Niquette and his friends Ben and Anthem tries to uncover the truth.  They will somehow be successful on their mission, but they will lose something from themselves.

I could not get into the book easily, only in last quarter I read it enjoying. I guess I could not like the characters.

First 3 quarters of the books look like a horror story but in the last quarter it has changed to something like fantasy and lovecraftian horror. The parasite and its effects are well thought.

It took 19 days to finish the book, probably characterization and the slowness of the first half makes it difficult to enjoy the book.

I try to rate plot, characterization, style, setting and entertainment separately and take the average of these for overall rating. It is 2.5, using the standards this book’s between “it was ok” and “liked it”.
