Viral Nation
Viral Nation, first book of the Viral Nation series, was written by Shaunta Grimes and published in July 1, 2013 by Berkley Trade.
In the future a virus spread all across the world and effected everyone. The United States, in which the story takes place in, is splintered into fifty walled cities. The Company finds a way to travel in time, and brings back necessary equipment to control the effects of the virus. Due to this control The Company becomes a very strong entity in the world. Every person needs to take one dose each day to suppress the virus.
Also The Company is using the time travel to stop the crimes before they happen. This action reminds me the police states. Everything is in control, but the controller can use it for his benefits and in this story we can see this.
I got this book from Netgalley. Thank you, Netgalley.
Clover Donovon, who is an autistic, wants to study in Waverly-Stead Academy but is rejected due to her bond with her dog. But she is drafted for the Time Mariners. Time Mariners are using the time travel to bring back necessary equipment from the future. They are forbidden to spoke anyone they have met in the future, but Clover breaks this rule.
After she broke the rule, she has learned how The Company is using everyone and telling them lies about the virus. Actually there is no reason to use the suppressant but The Company is using this lie to control the population.
Clover, his brother West and their friends will try to revolt against to The Company.
I read few YA Science-Fiction novels, mostly I prefers high and epic fantasy and space opera. But this book is a fast paced and enjoyable book. While writing this book I saw that there would be a second book, named Rebel Nation, which will be published in July 1, 2014. Probably I’ll read Rebel Nation too.
I try to rate plot, characterization, style, setting and entertainment separately and take the average of these for overall rating. The overall rating is 3.1 which translates to “liked it”.
