A Study in Silks
A Study in Silks, first book of the The Baskerville Affair series, was written by Emma Jane Holloway and published in September 24, 2013 by Del Rey.
The novel is about the story of Eveline Cooper who is the niece of Sherlock Holmes. In some ways this is a classic sherlockian story, but there a major differences in the setting. First of all there are automatons and steam barons which make the story more steampunk. The other difference is there are sorcerers and magic which make the story more urban fantasy.
I got this book from Netgalley. Thank you, Netgalley.
There is a murder and Eveline tries to solve it. She uses her uncle’s methods to solve the mystery, at some point she asks Sherlock Holmes’s opinions.
It’s always nice to read Sherlockian stories, it makes me to think and try to solve the mystery before it is revealed. I also need to praise Emma Jane for bringing Sherlock Holmes’ stories into Steampunk. I hope she will continue to write on this world. Also there are two more books in this series which are A Study in Darkness and A Study in Ashes. One negative part is that the story is unnecessarily long and distracting.
I try to rate plot, characterization, style, setting and entertainment separately and take the average of these for overall rating. The overall rating is 2.9 which translates to “liked it”.
